This beaded hair stick was beaded using the right angle weave stitch (RAW) 3x3.

I have long hair and I enjoy wearing my hair down most of the time, but sometimes it gets in my way when I am working, and usually I will then put something in my hair like a pencil or a dowel of some sort to hold it up without pulling too tightly. I have been having a difficult time lately finding hair sticks, and so I decided to make some for myself.

Lucky you, I've decided to take it a step further and make some to sell as well.

I've been experimenting with Indian Corn and the various things that I can do with them. They're so beautiful. I decided to put this pair on a key ring, and I did so using the drying technique that the Haudenoshaunee (People of the Longhouse) have dried them traditionally. Even now the Haudenoshaunee have a huge harvest celebration and husking gathering where community members get together and husk the corn, braid their husks together and hang the long strands of many ears of corn to dry.

This necklace was inspired by the Abalone Shell pendant itself. The beautiful colors of the abalone shell are amazing and seem to sparkle with small amounts of light. I really wanted to bring the color of the shell out and so I kept the rest of the necklace simple, but not boring.

I made this pair of Indian Corn Earrings in mostly blue.  I love the look of blue Corn!

Next I will be using fire colors to bring out the reds, oranges, and yellows of Autumn.

Indian Corn Earrings

Corn is a very special plant to the Oneida Nation and goes all the way back to our Creation Story when Sky Woman first fell from the Sky World and brought the corn seeds with her.   Corn is one of the plants that we call the "Three Sisters," the other two plants are beans and squash.  

The Oneida people, or as we call ourselves, Onayote' a:ka, meaning "The People of the Standing Stone," have been agriculturists since the beginning of our time on Turtle Island.  Corn, beans, and squash were grown together in a special way so that they thrived from one another, and the three sisters have been our main sustenance throughout our history, and plays a major part in our culture.

Corn, or maize, is originally from the Americas and has different meanings to different Native Nations around the Americas and Canada.  There are many ceremonies in which corn plays a large role.

To me, corn represents the fall harvest, a joyful time of year when the colors are brilliant shades of oranges, yellows, and browns.  Indian corn is a perfect example of our Earth at Autumn time, which also happens to be my favorite season.  

I should also mention that Indian corn is a current day decorative item, and that yellow corn or sweet corn is different today than it used to be due to human and natural manipulation.  However, it still plays a large role in many Native Nations throughout the Americas.

There are a lot of horse lovers in my life, myself included, and I know how passionate horse lovers are about their horses.  My mom once told me that when she looked into a horse's eye, it was as if the horse could see through to her soul.  And so is the connection between horse and humans.  I've designed this keychain with that connection in mind, and I hope that you enjoy having it with you as much as I've enjoyed making it.

While it seems to be difficult to see the sparkly mane that I've put on this horse, it seems to show better when the photo is enlarged.  Click on it and you can see what I mean.

This is the custom made necklace for my grandmother.  See earlier post for the matching earrings that I gave her after she fell in love with them.  She then requested a necklace to match and two more sets of earrings/necklaces, so here is the first necklace to match the earrings that she already has.  

I do wish that the color and sparkly would show how it does in real life, but no matter what angle I take the photos, I end up with about the same.  So, I chose this photo because it shows the full necklace.

The chain measures 30" and will fit easily over her head.

These earrings never got to be displayed for sale because as soon as my grandmother saw them she fell in love and I knew where they were meant to go.  :)  I will be making a woven necklace to match these for her, and she also gave me an order for two more necklace and earring sets!  They are much more sparkly then the camera would pick up, but here they are nonetheless. 

Beaded Bear Bracelet

My inspiration for this bracelet was the stone bear totem that I found at my local bead shop. The bear is fancy jasper and has beautiful greens and corals on a white background.

The bracelet itself is 3x3 right angle weave (RAW) stitched. I beaded the toggle clasp using the peyote stitch.

Measurements: This bracelet measures at just about 8.5 inches or 21 cm long when lying flat. However, because of the cylindrical shape of the bracelet, it fits my 7" wrist. I'm including photos of the bracelet on my wrist so that you get a better idea of how it might look on your wrist.

I weaved this bracelet and toggle clasp using Beadalon's thermally bonded bead weaver's thread, and I reinforced the stitches in the clasp and near the ends of the bracelet for longevity and durability. So, go ahead and wear this bracelet with confidence!

Native American Beaded Thunderbird Pendant

This stunning Native American Beaded Thunderbird necklace was created using #11 Miyuki seed beads, Beadalon's Wildfire thermally bonded bead weaver's thread in a 10 lb. break point, and bugle beads. It is one of a kind (OOAK) and was created using my own design using the brick stitch throughout the pendant and chain, which means that it was done one bead at a time.

The Thunderbird pendant measures 2" x 2", and the necklace measures 26" on the inside diameter (will fit over a head that is 26" or less), and measures 16" from the top of the necklace chain to the bottom of the fringe.

Background: When I was young, I was taught that the Thunderbird was a spirit-bird that was larger than an eagle and lived above, and hid behind, the clouds. I was also taught that it is the Thunderbird who creates the sound of thunder with the flapping of his great wings.  You can do a search to find out more information about the Thunderbird and what it means to various cultures, including within the various Native Nations.

The meaning of this necklace to me in a nutshell: The Thunderbird himself is done in fiery tones to show the turbulent energy of a thunder storm, and since thunderbird's hide behind, or are camouflaged by, the clouds I've created a turbulent, fiery cloud beneath him. <> The sound of thunder is shown by the << and >> pattern on each side of the cloud. In the chain part of the necklace I've placed lightening, and above that I've placed more fire colors to show the turbulent, moving winds and the sounds that the wind and thunder create. Beneath the pendant, the fringe shows more turbulent weather, and at the bottom of the fringes are rain drops.
